The ABC of Stress Management

Stress is created when external or internal demands made on an individual are in excess of his coping strategies and capabilities.

Let us illustrate how physical stress is formed. If you are asked to pick up a glass of water and place it on the table it is not stressful. If you are asked to pick up the glass of water and fill it to the brim without dropping any water outside, it is mildly stressful. If you are asked to hold that full glass of water for two hours without dropping any water, you will get totally stressed out.

For a busy man work has a cumulative effect that tends to stress him out in a similar way. Fisrt there is an important presentation to prepare for. Then there is the interview with a new client to handle. Add to that the fact that the boss wants you to run a couple of errands for him. And the result is the kind of stress that you face on a daily basis on an average work day.

A is for Awareness

To deal with stress you need to know that you are stressed out. Many people have forgotten how it feels to live a relaxed life and actually consider their frantic and harried existence is normal.Trust me running from pillar to post trying to get jobs done all day is not healthy for you.

Think about how you spent your day yesterday. Were you able to relax and enjoy at least an hour out of the day? Did you get any family time? Were you able to do any physical exercise or play any game that you enjoy? If you answered "no" to all these questions, you need to take a stress test.

B is for Balance

Once you have realized that stress is a real part of your day, you move on to the next step in dealing with it. This involves balancing the day's activities is such a manner that you get enough time to do things you want to besides doing the things that you need to. So after you have finished work for the day, you get to go to the gym.

What ever helps you reduce stress is a good thing to help balance your life. Family time is good for some people, while just getting out on a weekend trek alone might be more effective with others. You need to find what works best for you. Many people try Yoga or Physical Exercise very effective stress busters.

C is for Control

You live life on your own terms. If you allow people to overwork and burden you, you will get stressed out. So control your life and steer yourself to the place that you are happy and comfortable. Both mentally and financially. A lot of people get stressed out because they are financially insecure.This can be overcome by saving and investing wisely.

Learn what triggers stress in you. Every individual is unique. Some have monetary tensions, as mentioned earlier. Others may have family or relationship issues that are causing stress. Students get stressed out over performance evaluation of exams. There are so many reasons. Once you have the cause of stress mapped out it is easier to find solutions to balance and neutralize it. Take control of how you let stress affect your life.

Well said, Awareness and Control are key aspects of consciousness, and Balance like in anything in nature, has to be kept for stability, this being our mental stability! or the stability of the human race.... the more men and women out there who are conscious of their own being, the more stable our path will be in the evolution of mankind, this is of utmost importance.... dealing with stress and consciousness is well laid out in Eckhart Tolle's book: The Power of Now
