How to get rid of a cough and cold - Ten home remedies you can use
92
Winters are the worst time possible to try to get rid of a cough. No matter what you do that pesky irritation of the throat never seems to leave you alone.
If you have too much cough syrup you can't keep alert. I know I fall right off to sleep with some of them and while the nap is refreshing when I wake up I find its made no difference whatsoever to my cough!
So how do you get rid of a cough? You get proper medication from the doctor, then you try and get rid of the symptoms of a cold and cough by treating it with some old home remedies.
Everyone has a favorite one that works best for them. Given here is a set of them that I have used on my family with varying degrees of success. Some of them are easy and others a bit difficult. Hope one of them works for you.
1. Honey and Warm Water
Heat a glass of water and add a tablespoon of honey to it. Now drink this as warm as you can. The honey soothes the throat and helps lessen the irritation caused by the cough.
2. Gargle with Warm Salt Water
If you find that your throat is beginning to hurt and you may be about to get the flu, just do this. Warm up water and add a spoon full of salt to it and do deep throat gargles. Make sure you use drinking water if you tend to swallow while gargling.
3. Lemon and Honey
The honey soothes the throat and the lemon juice gives you a good shot of natural vitamin C which helps fight cold and cough. You can mix a teaspoon of honey into the juice of a small lemon. Add some warm water if you find it too sour to swallow.
4. Vicks Vapor Rub on Feet
Before you get into bed just rub some vicks vapor rub onto the feet and wear your socks. The decongestant should also be applied on the chest, the back, the neck and the forehead for optimal effect.
5. Breathing Exercise
In Pranayam breathing you can do a combination of Kapal Bharati and Anulom Vilom. The former will clear out the mucus and the latter will help ease out respiration troubles by clearing the nasal passage. Once the mucus is out the cough will also dry off.
6. Steam Inhalation
The easiest way to get rid of congestion is to do steam inhalation. Heat up water till it is steaming then put a towel over your head and the bowl of water and inhale. A five minute bout is usually enough to loosen up the mucus.
7. Drink Kadha
Boil 4 black cardamon, 10 black pepper, 1 piece of cinnamon and about ten leaves of holy basil in 3 glasses of water. Reduce till it is one glass worth then decant and drink as warm as possible. Drink at least thrice a day till the cough goes away.
8. Turmeric powder with Jaggery
Roast half teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi) and add some grated jaggery (gud) to it and make it into a ball. Now eat this last thing before you get into bed. Do not drink any water after this. If the bitter taste of the turmeric persists eat more of the sweet jaggery but do not drink water.
9. Nutmeg Powder
Eat a quarter teaspoon of freshly ground nutmeg the first thing in the morning. The spice has a number of healing properties attributed to it. It helps with flu and also with your indigestion problems. Don't eat or drink anything for 15 minutes after you eat the nutmeg powder.
10. Eucalyptus oil on pillow
This essential oil has soothing and nose unblocking properties. Since you cant use it directly on the skin in its concentrated form just pour a couple of drops on the pillow you sleep on. The smell will help keep your nose unblocked all night. You can also mix it with a regular base oil like olive oil and massage it onto your temples and throat region for relief from cold and cough.

Very useful. I am investigating Pranayam Breathing as a result of reading this. It is good to know my own remedy of Green tea with Lemon, Honey and Ginger, is likely to do some good.
Very useful, especially because I think there is not worth take medications for "simple" cough and cold , particularly to children.
I find this information very helpful...thanks for sharing.
I just did #2- gargled with warm water with salt, as I woke up with itchy throat, early today. I found you in FB. The others are new information that will surely be included in my list of home remedies for coughs and colds. Thank you.
Nice share.. I generally suffer from cold whenever there is climatic change, and because of that I can't concentrate and take those chemical medicine, which are harmful (as said by many). Now, I can use this home remedy to get rid of my cold.
Thanks..
i always get a cough and colds so these tips are really helpful for me, thanks a lot.
Thanks for the remedies and I agree we have to break the unnecessary antibiotic habit.

Interesting, some things I didn't know! Thanks for sharing :-)
Cough can really discomfort someone..Nice hub, keep it up
Great i have tried some of them and they works.
The worst part about getting a cold is its impossible to sleep! Thanks a bunch for the tips. Now i know what to do if it ever shows up again But am praying it doesn't:-)
Thank you for the tips about how to get rid of a cough. I personally do your #3 (the honey & lemon thing) but I add hot water and make it like a tea.
nice post keep it up....!!!!!
This is a very interesting and informational hub! When i get sick again I am going to be trying all these remedies! hahahaa
Great ideas for managing a cold and cough. I especially agree with the vicks on the feet. We apply that to the child in our home and it works! Some of the other suggestions I will try when the time comes. Thanks for such a useful hub.
Thanks, I love home remedies and have tried the eucalapytus and it does work.
Nice hub. I will try some of these.
I love reading other people's advice! My personal routine is to down a bunch of elderberry syrup and 8 cups of green tea when I first get "sniffly" or run down. That tends to stop it in its tracks. If I am actually sick, I continue with the elderberry and green tea and add in some vitamin C.
If I get sick I am using this advice!!Thanks. Useful!!
This will come in very useful when I get my yearly cold, usually as winter approaches. Good advice and nicely laid out.
I continue to realize that one can have alternatives to treating cough in a natural way. Love it! :D
Really Great Tips for those who may be frequently suffering from cough and cold. To my knowledge cough syrups and tablets will certainly cause side effects. You have given here great home remedies to get relief from cough and cold. Thanks a lot for this great Hub! cashmere
I absolutely appreciate the natural approach. Several I had never heard of!
Thx for the tips! Something that is surprisingly nice when you have a cold (unfortunately not a remedy) is heating up fruit juices in the microwave.
This sounds way interesting! I'll have to give a few of these tips a try if I find myself under the weather this winter. Bookmarked! Thanks for the information!
These are some really fantastic ideas. I get colds a lot... in fact I had pneumonia over the summer -- this list would have been really helpful then! Well, it'll be something I can refer to next time!
nice information. really useful to me. it is very much irritating when i catch cold. i also support medicine is not necessary every time in every little cause! thanks a lot cashmere.
Great remedies. My mother in law makes me ginger tea when I have a cold. Nothing seems to work better for clearing the sinuses.
Useful information.
Yeah a great article on getting rid of coughing. Most of them seem like common sense but there were a few on that list I hadn't tried and that is likely true of many other people too.
What are your thoughts on Neti Pots for stuffed up sinus issues?
A really handy hub, whenever my daughter gets a cold she's guaranteed to get an irritating cough (for her and us!!). I've tried a couple on the list before, will certainly try others. I'm a great lover of vicks, but have never tried it on feet before. I'm sure I'll be trying it before the year is out!!
Very useful hub especiallly now, when winter is coming so fast.
Great Hub! :)
The old remedies really are the best. Just watch Dr. Oz and he has many things that an individual can do to help themselves. The thing I like best about his show that the majority of things that one can do are more preventative medicine than remedies.
Thanks for your advice I severely need your tips
I have been hit with the Flu virus just recently and these seem great holistic ways to get over them. Good informative Hub, Thumbs Up :)
This is great information, I love a good cup of ginger tea with honey and lemon whenever I am feeling sick. Thanks for this great article!
Thanks for the great info. It is coming up to be the cold and flu season again...so I thank you for your good advice.
While I hope I don't need any of these soon. I like to combine 2 of your tips. I put a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil in a steaming cup of water and inhale.
Useful tips, i've just gotten over a cold and found that one of the most useful things that helped was a home made ginger brew.
Slice up lots of ginger in to a pan and boil for around 30 mins, after that add honey and lemon and drink... i swear it helps!
thanks for sharing this very useful hub cashmere. i am really looking for natural ways to relieve my colds since i am allegric to Chlorphenamine Maleate
I currently have a persistent cough and plan on trying the warm water and honey brew. I love the scent of Eucalyptus and will have to buy some and try that too. Thanks Cashmere:)
Thanks for sharing this much needed information. I plan to take up on this information and try to get rid of this dry cough I had for months. Thanks. Voted up.
great tips, thanks for sharing
Great tips! I actually just got over a bad cold and wish I would have read this earlier, lol! Oh well, now I know what to do next time ;) Thanks for the advice!
A couple of years back I caught two or three colds in that one year. Very annoying. One of them especially just didn't want to leave me and lasted for two weeks. If I'd have read your hub back then it would've definitely given me additional strategies for making the situation more bearable!
Really useful stuff - can just feel the scratch in my throat...
Thanks for the info. I'd much rather a home remedy than pharmaceuticals. I'll give them a try the next time I get a cold.
Thanks for all the information. I am getting a sore throat right now and want to nip this in the bud before it gets worse.
Excellent post!Wonderful blog I always say that to keep waiting for inspiration is a way to fool ourselves and just not do the job! The more you practice, the more you get in touch with
whatever turns you on, more often this muse we call inspiration will visit you! thanks for sharing The power of blogging is really changing the landscape of politics and journalism as we know it! http://breakingnews24hrs.net http://oddees.net
nice and pharma free - excellent - thanks for the list!
Some fantastic info, i have had a cold for ages so going to try these now!!
wow i cant believe you got a perfect score for this hub! Congratz!!!
Excellent list. There are some suggestions most likely not everyone has heard of. I did not read every comment (there are lots), but another suggestion that is gaining popularity is to use a neti pot (pour water from one nostril, til it pours out the other); along with that add either salt water to the solution or a couple drops of Grape Seed Extract. They say you can gargle with the Grape Seed as well.
Lots of great ideas to keep coughs and colds at bay. Thanks for sharing.
you can also try my Jamaican cure here at:
Interesting- I've never heard if using Vicks on feet.
vicks on feet? usually put on chest, but I'll try it next time.thanks
A huge thanks for posting.. I used these tips and i feel much better.. Thanks again :)
Yes useful information, I didnt know about drinking Kahda for coughs and colds.
Boil water in a pot, remove the pot from cooker, add chamomile, inhale steam for a 5 to 10 minutes. You can use a towel to cover your head and pot, for maximum effect.
Be careful not to burn yourself!
Repeat the procedure at least 3 times a day. I did it several times so far and it worked very well against cold.
Thanks for the tips. Besides loading up on vitamin C these will certainly help you feel less miserable when you have a cold.
"@crockpotcooking, cant we just boil water on the hob or microwave and add chamomile?"
Yes of course, however I would not recommend heating water in microwave. If by accident heated too much, it might burst out of pot and burn when moved.
These are great tips for home remedies. The steam inhalations works wonders. I usually use tea bags in the hot water. It really opens up your pores. Just be careful that you don't have an accident. And its best to do this when children are not running around at home. Trust me, its not worth the risk of scalding. However, if you are safe at home; then its awesome. Really works. Tried and tested. Sometimes, mother knows best. I have to admit as much I hate saying it.
A common cold will last a week if you treat it, seven days if you don't. All we can do is to reduce discomfort as much as possible while cold runs its course. Home remedies work much better in this regard than popping pills. Thanks for compiling them for hubbers.
I'm sitting at home with the beginnings of a cough and cold and this was the perfect reminder of what I should do. I remember my mom giving me some of these home remedies. Thanks!
Thanks Cashmere! I have heard of these things before but in different places so it is nice to have a list all together I can refer to. Keep posting useful material!
I do have cough and cold for last few days. I like your remedy of turmeric and jaggery. I need to try this today night. Excellent hub and Voted up.
Well, I have tried six of the ten; the next time I get a cold I'll give the other four a try. Thanks for the infor and nice job on the article.
With co-pays and deductibles rising every year, it isn't always feasible to run to the doctor when my family gets a cough. I love the ideas in this article and am going to give them a try. You may have just saved us money. Thanks.
I always take wheat grass, does amazing things
Thanks for the information. My mother coughs a lot. Ill tell her to try some of your remedies
This is such a great hub. Years ago when my infant son had a cold, I used some castor oil on the bottom of his feet and I also rubbed some on the top his head, it worked!!!!!!! A lot of his cold came out when he went to the bathroom. I definitely agree with your suggestions because they all work. Keep those home remedies coming!!
I agree, gargling with salt water and steam helps a lot in cough and cold. Also, try swallowing chopped spoonful garlic with a glass of water.
Could have used this last week! Thanks so much. Glad I read it. I love the oil on the pillow idea and many of the others. I do gargle with salt water to help with a cough and cold. Great!
Great remedies, I use eucalyptus oil mixed with water in a spray bottle then spray it around the shower before I get in. That mixed together with the steam works wonders. Also try adding a few drops to your humidifier at night and you'll definately have a great night's sleep.
Thank You for making this.
I have learned some interesting remedies.
Nice hubs.I use steam with vicks for cold.it works wonder.voted up!
Lemon Balm steeped as Tea with a dash of honey is great for sore throats
Nice information, Gelsimium also is very good for coughs it is a homeopathic rememdy
I have a killer cold right now. Will try some of these tips.
My mom make me hany and lemon and adds warm water I find this very usful and I'm 100% this will work
-P.S.

I never get the flu (knock on wood) however, when I get a cold..it seems to last forever. Great info. The next time I get a cold.. I will try these tips.
Voted up and useful.

Boil mustard oil with crushed garlic along with a teaspoon of ajwain till garlic gets dark brown. Filter the oil in some utensil and then apply is warm on kids chest, back and whole body if possible leaving hair. It works like wonder and little one gets good sleep.
Very helpful and simple steps thank you for sharing:)
so many of us suffer every year from varying degrees of coughs and colds. A lot of people either don't want to or can't afford to buy the cough and cold mixtures from the chemist.
The information contained in your hub is very useful for this type of situation. There are so many choices for every type of problem from a chest cold down to a runny or stuffy nose problem.
You have gone to a lot of trouble to do this and it is going to give a lot of people help and peace of mind to know that there are alternatives such as the old fashioned way.
They don't have to pay a fortune at the chemist.
Great hub gets thumbs up from me and intersting and useful. I am also following you. Pam x
Good information, my mother taught me about the honey, lemon and salt water gargles. They do work great for a cold. I didn't know about rubbing Vicks Vapor Rub on the feet. That is very interesting. Thank you!
Some of these I have tried, some of them I've never heard of but will try really soon because I currently feel a bit under the weather. One of my other favorite things to do is make tea from sage leaves because sage is antiseptic. It isn't really economical unless you have a sage plant, though.
#4 is my mother's personal favorite! Great article.
My grandmother also adds a lot of ginger for us in our tea!
Great list here! I didn't know about a few of them until now. I'll add my secret - organic apple cider vinegar. You have to get used to the taste and should dilute it in water, but it's got a lot of health benefits including anti viral and anti bacterial properties. Thanks for the good read!
I like the Vic's on the feet idea and the eucalyptus oil on the pillow...and don't forget Chicken Soup the "Jewish Penicillin"
Tea with salt and ginger are best solution.
I'm highly allergic to dust but I can't avoid it. So often I have to bear these problems. Well nice remedies are quoted here and hope these will make it possible for me to get rid of heavy antibiotic and anti-allergic medicines.
Voted up, tweeted and facebooked! I'm dealing with a nasty cold right now and using the warm salt water gargle and Airborne. It does help!
yes the salt and water does work well!
Do not use the tumurac it tastes horrible!!! All the others things work aswell if not better
I drink a lot of chai tea which is similar to one of the teas you mentioned, but I will try adding holy basil to it to see the effect.
I've tried various alternative cold remedies, and each one works better for certain colds and flus and not other virus strains, so it's weird. Had success with: Andrographis, and currently have been using Traditional Medicinals "Breathe Easy" which greatly minimizes cold symptoms and gets you well quicker and is the best remedy I've found. Honey and lemon is soothing for the throat but doesn't quite stop a cough for very long. I found some great cough drops at hf store, they are east Indian, but can't remember the name and I think they contained a lot of ginger. Always on the lookout for cold remedies. I like the mention of Lemon Balm, it's great stuff, but I never thought of it for the throat...I used to use it for menstrual cramps years ago and it worked like a charm.
I am all for home remedies, I don't trust pharmacies a lot since they are all for profit.
This is a really handy article. You know what else I've found helps for a cold -- especially when you have a nasty sore throat? Elderberry. I know that the jury is still out on whether or not it works, but I've been on the verge of a cold three times in the past few years, and it always stopped it right in its tracks. That's a pretty good record in my book. Thank you for your interesting hub!
Wow L00L
Thank you for the tip on "Steam Inhalation"! Great advice and I am going to try that today.
Great article. The information about various spices, herbs, and oils isn't very well known in America, and holistic solutions like these are often scoffed at. We need more hubs like these!
it makes me hard when suffering from cold. your tips are fantastic and hope to follow.. nice post anyway.
This is good information for everyone. I like to drink lots of tea. The steam inhalation and eucalyptus is also something I do all the time just by going into the steam room at my gym. It works wonders.
Great article, i like the Honey and Warm Water, its a little bit like what i do when i get a cold. I make a hot toddy made of lemon tea, honey, and 2 ounces of Bourbon. It clears your cold right up, but must be 21 years old :)
Great tips. Thanks. My cousin gave me the lemon and honey tip a few days ago.
My favourite cure for the cold is homemade chicken soup with chicken, barley and potato. Serve hot with black pepper.
I love this article! I also make tea by boiling ginger root. This seems to help too. Thanks for the info.
Cashmere, Wonderful! These are fabulous healthy tips to remedy a cold! I am all for natural solutions! Thank you for sharing, Peace & Blessings!

Hi, Cashmere! Thanks fot post. Actually, I feel a've cot a cold. It's better to use as a complex treatment or it's better to choose the best one? Thank u again
Sleep is the best remedy. Definitely not heavy nights out drinking with little sleep and then going out in the cold and wet..

I have found the best way for me to not even get a cold or the flu was to build up my immune system with good herbal vitamins and minerals. Have not had a cold or flu in over 2yrs. But if you do , try lots of Red Raspberry tea. Could make a difference in a matter of hours.
