How to create a niche content site and monetize it

86

By cashmere

There is a lot of things that you can do to make money online and this is a simple, legal method that you can use to earn money online.

Create a niche based content website and then monetize it well. If you have some basic knowledge of how the internet works you can do this in a snap.

Even if you don't know how to start this hub will help you get off to a good start with creating a decent content website in a good niche.

See all 2 photos

Develop the niche content site

Definition of content site

A content site does not attempt to sell you anything. All it does is give you a great deal of information about a specific topic or niche. There is no direct product to be bought or sales letter on the site. You are just sharing information with the visitors to your site about the niche that you have chosen.

Choosing a niche

You need to pick a good niche to develop a content site about. There is no point developing a site about a niche which no one wants to know about. This is an important step and you need to go through Google trends and Yahoo buzz to see exactly what people are looking up.

Keyword research

Once you have your niche all picked out you need to get the correct keywords that people type into search engines. Using these keywords on the site will make it easier for you to get organic traffic to the site. There are sites like Google's Adwords tool that can tell you which keywords would be most effective.

Getting content

You don't need to be an expert to write your own content for the site. You can outsource it to a freelancer. However if you don't have the money then you can use article directories and pick up articles that you find useful. You can use these articles as along as you keep the links intact for the attributed authors and have no problem setting up great content.

Setup site

I wrote a hub about 14 sites that allow you to set up free websites. Just go and open up an account with one of these sites to get your niche content site set up. Now add the content that you have already got. For SEO optimization you will like to use the keywords that you have found in your research.

Different ways to monetize

Now that the site is all set up you need to monetize it. You can use Google Adsense Publisher Id to get relevant ads on the site. Or you can use Chitika ads. In fact you can also use Kontera to get in text ads going. Another good site for in text advertising is Infolinks. They have no referral program but are good. Personally I found their rates better than Kontera's.

There you have it. A good website with content in a niche that people are hunting for. Now wait for a month or two for the site to get indexed in the search engines and you will have a stream of pennies dropping in from your site on a regular basis. Now repeat the process with another site.

8 reasons why a content site fails

1. Weak niche selection - This is the crux of the matter. If you choose the wrong niche no matter what else you do it will not work. You can do everything else right but if you get into the incorrect niche it will be to no avail.

2. Inadequate keyword research - Just taking a look at the keywords in the list is not enough. You need to test which ones work at generating traffic and which ones do not. This means that you need to get serious about the research.

3. Poor or duplicate content - You must provide value for the reader and make them want to come back and share the content on the site with other friends. Remember the main draw of the site is the content that you put on it.

4. Not enough SEO - Considering that you will depend a great deal on search engine traffic for the site's success you need to spend some time and effort in getting the right SEO for your content site.

5. Lack of focus - If you have too many elements on 1 site you will divert the visitor's attention. Focus on a single niche with a single site. You can also build another site for a parallel niche that you feel will work well.

6. Give up too early - Like with anything else in life this method of money generation online takes time and practice. You will not hit pay dirt at the first go. You need to have patience to see it succeed.

7. No traffic plan - While search engines will generate organic traffic based on your key word research you will not see much traffic coming in from them unless your site pages get indexed. For this you need to have a good backlinking plan and also look at other free traffic sources such as article marketing.

8. Outsourcing in order to get more done - You can not leave your niche content site to a freelancer to run. It will need constant tweaking depending on what you niche content you have choosen. This means hands on work for you along with anyone else you hire.

I found this very useful. Only thing I can add is, if you are using a free website, check their policy on advertising. The free sites tend to be supported by advertising so may not share revenue or allow your ads.

Hi Cashmere. Always nice to read your writing.

I have just launched my second sales site since being at hubpages. I think your advice to design content rich sites without sales items is a great idea and rather use the other methods of generating income for the site. I must say with free websites, there is no risk. So thank you.

Alekhouse, Greentea, KK Gals, and Peter, thanks for your encouraging comments.

Don, I have three content sites on weebly now and of them one generates about 10 cents a day. Another one about 20 cents a day and the third one is currently under construction. So I find it quite good despite sharing 50% revenue with adsense.

Thank you - your hub is a great pep talk and reminder. As I sat down today I said it was time to finish the blog I started (about 6 months ago) - and just never got back to. There is always something else to do.

But to create your own niche content can bring back a bit of enthusiasm and creativity to your writing.

So I am bookmarking your hub - because I need this pep talk every now and then. And yes, I will get that blog going - I already linked it to AdSense.

@cashmere: Nice hub! Would look forward to read more hubs from you

@Dale: don't take the free websites for granted. I had one of my niche site hosted in a free server while I only paid for the domain name. I was cool until the day it started receiving 500+ hits, and started making $40+ a day and suddenly the free servers shut me off, saying my bandwidth quota was exceeded. Thankfully I noticed the downward spike in adsense account and cared to check it; if I were away it would have been easy to get a mild penalty from Google. They even blocked me from cPanel. Somehow I figured a way through their support system and moved my site to paid hosting.. Now everything is paid and secure.

So I would suggest keep your site in free server until it takes off, and then move it.

One aspect that you appear to have missed is building page rank. Sites will fail to get hits if the PR value is not built-up by getting backlinks. This is the most difficult part of niche marketing and the most important.

cashmere profile image

cashmere Hub Author 15 months ago

@ Step and Tamaram thank you for your kind comments.

@ dsmythe Glad I made you aware of another source of content you can use.

@ Janderson99 organic page rank will come your way in a couple of months if your keyword research is solid. And in any case PR is no real indicative of earnings.

In reply to your comments "@ Janderson99 organic page rank will come your way in a couple of months if your keyword research is solid. And in any case PR is no real indicative of earnings."

Content builds PR and without PR there will be not hits and no money. Good Luck1

Hi Cashmere,

I believe content sites still serve a purpose as well as non-content sites. I also believe in giving people more than just a site filled with ads, but that's my opinion. Why not try both methods and see what works best. After all, if you're in affiliate marketing, testing to see

what works is what it's all about (not to mention making money).

In the future I plan on making more content niche sites using Weebly. Will see how that goes. Thanks for the article Cashmere, it was very informative and refreshing.
