I lost 10 kgs in 8 weeks

Yes this hub is about weight loss. One of the "Evergreen" topics on the net.

No I am not selling any miracle weight loss drug or product. It was all done the old fashioned way.

If you want to know how here's the details. I was about 56 kgs when I got married. Then the next three years saw my husband and me getting comfortable with each other. I gained two kgs each year.

So by the time I got pregnant I was at 62kgs. And now that I was pregnant there was no way to control my diet. I was eating as healthy as possible, but hey gaining weight is expected at this stage.

When I delivered I was 72 kgs. Now everyone said once the baby has you running around after him you'll drop the weight really fast. A couple of years went by I became 75 kgs. Now I decided I was fat.

I mean close to obese fat. My clothes from before pregnancy were still in the trunk I had packed them. I took them out and had a look. There was no way I was fitting into any of these pants or sari blouses. Skirts and shirts have a way of accommodating you.

Eat Well, Just Eat Less

So when I first decided to lose some weight, I knew I was not going to go on a crash diet. I am the kind who likes her food. At first i limited my calorie intake to 1200 calories per day, but now I consume 1800 calories per day. If you want to count your calories you can download a list from the internet. Many sites give you the calorie count of the food you eat.

So I knew I had to eat sensibly and push up the calorie burning. Only I get bored very easily and so I knew variety was the order of the day. That is why I started a list of things that I could do that helped me to burn fat.

1 Cycling

I have always loved cycling even as a child. I got my husband a cycle for Valentine's Day. He never used it and six months later I decided to put it to good use. So every morning after I loaded my kid into his school bus I would go cycling. I usually did between 3 to 5 kms each morning and came home.

2 Pranayam

This is the set of breathing exercises that helps you maintain good health. One particular type of breathing called the Kapal Bharati actually helps you shed weight. It is not at all difficult to practice and any one can do it. If you need more details visit my hub on pranayam. It will help you understand just what I did.

3 Yoga

Simple yoga asanas which helped strengthen my back muscles and burn some fat. I am not a teacher of yoga so I do not remember the exact names of all the asanas, but if you do an art of living course they will teach you all the basic asanas that help exercise your muscles. Some of them are really simple, while others will take some doing.

4 Walking

In the evening I would go for a 5km walk. Initially it would take me more than an hour to cover the distance, but as I got fitter and my stamina increased I got faster. Now I can do it in 45 minutes on a good day. Although I find walking alone very boring and when I walk with a friend the speed tends to suffer.

5 Tummy Tucks and Push Ups

These are simple to do and can be done any time you have a few minutes to spare. I usually do these at least an hour after eating. So as not to affect the digestion.

I also have a habit of watching TV on my tummy and swinging my legs. You really burn calories and don't even notice. A fifteen minute spell is worth ten minutes of walking in terms of calorie loss. Not bad for just watching TV.

On the whole I lost 10 kgs which would be around 20 pounds. I have managed to keep off the weight for almost nine months. So I'm quite sure that the way I went about losing weight was right. I have more stamina, and am not obese. I may never be slim, but I'll settle for pleasantly plump.

As of now I'm almost dreading going home to my mom as I know I'll end up hogging on all the treats that she cooks up. That means I'm gonna gain weight in the month I am away.

Glad it worked for you. I tried all kinds if things for years but only started losing weight after resuming martial arts practice twice a week. Once was not enough. I found I got thinner but weighed the same. I seem to have lost at least two inches from my waist in the laat yeaar

Which brings me to one of my favourite peeves: Using weight asa measure of fat. Muscle is denser than fat and so you can get thinner and heavier. OK, you would have to move to almost athletee level training to do so but it can happen.

Oh yes Sarah, it is possible. Only you need to work hard at it. Also every one has a different metabolic rate, so if you have a fast one, you may loose even more weight in 2 months.

so I was 78.5 kgs when I decided I had enough... so I joined a diet course and lost 17 kgs just by controlling what I ate and no exercise at all... but due to exams and scedule pressures I gave in and didnt get to my target goal of 55 kgs. I stopped controlling what I ate when I was 61 kgs... 2 years passed... I just went on the scales and it said 63.7... its time again and your article is one of the first pieces of motivation Ive found after Ive decided on joining the gym on monday and getting back into track... life is too short to deal with self image problems.. you have it inside.. even if it is covered by a layer of fat.. so get rid of that unflattering layer and shine!

The best way to loose weight is to lower your calorie intake and pep up the exercise. Do remember that exercise make you hungry, so at that time you should not eat, but drink some beverage, as it is less calories and more filling for the stomach.

Hi Cashmere... any new update on your weight loss? My case was similar - dropped from 80 kgs to 60 over 2 year period but am back to 64... SO FRUSTRATING... if you just stop the exercise the weight piles back :(

Kamaira I suggest that you do stomach specific exercises and concentrate on reducing the paunch. You dont need diet control.

Moni I think you have reached what is called the Plateau phase in weight loss. Go back to a normal routine for one week. Eat and drink normally and don't do any excessive exercise. Then again step up the work outs it should help.

I think you need to begin your walks and add one more exercise component to it. Usually the body gets used to a kind of exercise and then it does not help to lose weight. Add a new thing like tennis, or swimming and it will begin to burn fat again.

My weight at my marrige is 58kgs, after baby its 70kgs, 1yr before i gone to gym to reduce my weight still i was 70kgs and due to my studies i left gym now my weight is 75kgs. My hub and my in laws laugh at me because of my fat appearance i feel very bad and challenged them i will reduce my weight around 59 or 60kgs by Jan'12.

Please help me to reduce my body weight. Even my back and front seems very huge...everybody making fun out of me. I feel happy, because others are enjoying and am making others to smile / laugh....still please understand my feelings. i have no support / motivation. only my motivator/supporter is my mom, but i last her 3 monts back, she is no more. I feel u like my mom, please help me to get into my shape...thx

Jaya, losing 15 kgs by Jan 12 will take a lot of concentrated physical effort. You need to make a week wise break up on the calories you intend to lose and then exercise accordingly.

Remember to control your diet but not to starve yourself. Think of eating foods like cucumber which actually need more calories to be digested than they give your body. Make this a regular snack.

Never stay hungry, its counter productive to losing weight.

Sorry to hear about your mom, but you must have some friends who will support you. DO not ask your in laws or husband for support if they make fun of you. Go to a gym or seek out a nutritionist, they will help you and become your support system. All the best

i am planning to do below activity with food. Please suggest me is this ok or need to change.

one glass of water - 6.30am

one cafe - 8.30am

one pomegranate fresh juice - 10 am

cucumber slices -11 am

rice with sambar/rasam with one vegetable - 12.30

taking tea - 3pm

veg soup - 5pm (some time taking some time not)

chappathi - 3 nos - 8 or 9 pm

activity : all household activity other than cooking. In gym 40mins in walker & strech, home gym, cycling all to gether 20 mins.

Kindly advice.

yes devasisha I was eating chapattis and curry but not too much of it.

Jaya I would suggest that you eact the chappatis earlier in the day as the carbs need time to process and burn up as fuel. if you eat it so close to sleeping the energy will not be used and it will be converted to fat.

hey,i was 60kgs good for my tall height \and build was happy with that! now after indulging and having a baby i am not 88kgs. not good at all!! I am one 2 meal replacements-milkshake diet and one healthy meal a day (veg,protein) size of your hand! lots of exercise,walking/cycling/swimming/boxfit each week. I have been on this for a week and lost 3kgs! keep up the hard work and when you are snackish inbetween the shakes eat half an apple ect. Careful of certain fruits as they are high in sugars. I'm aiming for 60kgs so fingers crossed i will achieve this!

Vigneshwari, since you are still feeding your child diet is not advised. Exercise as and when convenient, and once you wean off your child you can step up the fitness regime.

Jaya cycling is excellent exercise, but if you need to stop for traffic etc it is not consistent and the calories you burn are not the same. So you may want to add some pure cycling time in a park or inside the colony for pure exercise.

I was eating the same things that I was cooking for the family, but I merely restricted my intake to 1200 calories. So if I finished the calorie count by tea, there was no more dinner. You can reduce it gradually from 1800 to 1200 as other wise you will starve

Yes I was eating my one chapati in lunch and one chapati at dinner. Plus I took one spoon of sugar in my hot beverage. Remember the trick is in ensuring all the minerals and vitamins go into the body, but only in a limited amount. That's how you counter the overeating that causes us to put on weight.

Anatara I do not recommend any artificial weight loss through medicine. Such drugs do you more harm than good in the long run.

Neha I was eating no fried snacks, just fresh veges and fruits for little in between hunger pangs. Breakfast was also whatever was made for the family, but in limited amounts.

I have visted so many sites for some tips to reduce weight and always found diets which help you reduce weight fast only to gain it again.

You have given very smart and practical tips.

Pinky that is kind of steep a target, after all the main goal of weight loss is gaining fitness?!! I'm not a dietitian so cant help you with charts but I would recommend you eat sensibly.

Any part of pranayam is always useful to the body. Don't do more than three cycles of ten each for both in a day. Too much of a good thing can also be bad.

Kavita there was no special diet chart that i followed. I ate the same things that I cooked for my family. ONLY I ate less of each thing, plus I avoided most fried products ad bakery products. That was the only difference

Sumita, the little things do add up. Just think of small things that you can do to burn calories which can be incorprated in your daily routine. Then calculate how much of it you need to do to burn 500 calories a day. Simple pranayam breathing for 15 minutes can help you burn 50 calories with ease

Hi Annie, You did not mention your height, and general body type. These are important considerations to determine your ideal weight. In general I'd just ask you to pep up the exercise routine and limit the junk food intake.

Exercise is the best remedy at your age. Do at least three different forms of exercise in the day. Walking, playing outdoor games like basket ball and badminton are great ways to burn up calories and lose weight. Also keep a check on the junk food you eat.

At 17the best way to burn fat would be to jog or play games like squash, badminton and basket ball. For the waist in particular try some simple yoga asanas that make you twist the area. They are very effective for toning the tummy muscles. Thank you for the compliment, I feel the saree is an amazing dress.

hi cashmere is this diet plan ok with 1 hr brisk walking Day 1 [Fruits] – Day one of your diet regime will start with all fruits diet. You may eat fruits of your choice and in any quantity. There is no limit. Eat till your stomach is full. In case you don’t find fruits in nearby stores, you can substitute it with packaged fruit juices but avoid fruit juices that have preservatives in it, they don’t really do any good in this case. On day one, you must eat fruits ONLY and don’t forget to drink at least 7 glasses of water.

Note: The only fruit that will not be on your plate is Banana. Every other fruit is ok except banana. Don’t limit it to just one fruit, have as many different fruits you can.

Day 2 [Vegetables] – This is all vegetables day. If you prefer, you may have raw or/and cooked vegetables. Eat as much as you want to, no quantity restrictions. If you want to cook the vegetables, you may do so but avoid using oil while you cook. 7 glasses of water today also.

Day 3 [Fruits and Vegetables] – On day three, you will eat a mixture of fruits and vegetables. No quantity restrictions, eat till you fill your stomach. Also, eat one banana today, just one!

Day 4 [Vegetables, Bananas and Milk] – Today you will eat 6 bananas, 3 glasses of milk and small quantity of vegetables. In the morning, your breakfast will start with 2 bananas and one big glass of milk. You will follow this in the afternoon for your lunch. In the evening eat 2 bananas, eat vegetables and drink one glass of milk.

Day 5 [Rice and tomatoes] – Today you will have one cup of rice, six full tomatoes (medium size) and since you are having lots of tomatoes, drink 10 glasses of water today.

Day 6 [Rice and Vegetables] – One cup of rice and raw/cooked vegetables of your choice. It’s recommended that you eat rice in the morning and for rest of the day, eat vegetables.

Day 7 [Fruits, Vegetables and Rice] – On day seven, eat fruits, vegetables and 1 cup of rice. You may substitute fruits and vegetables with juices as well, but that is to avoid.

This diet regime works well by burning more fat than accumulating it and since it avoids all sorts of food items that eventually gets converted to fat to become a part of your body, the weight loss is faster and harmless.

Nasreen, this is also known as the General Motors diet as it was originally developed for the workers of that company in Detroit. The diet usually helps you lose about 2-3 kgs in the week.

Nasreen in my quest to lose weight I went trough this phase where i tried out all kinds of weird diets, and the GM diet was one of them. You can read about the others in a hub that I wrote about them. It was one of the few diets that actually did help u lose some weight.

@ Teja, stopping eating regular food will make you put on more weight as the body feels that it must store its fat due to famine conditions. Eat regularly in small doses to make the metabolism more active.

Good motivational article. Can you please tell about any free or binge days u take in a week. For example many people say that you can take 1 day off in a week to eat whatever you want so that there would be no cravings. Did u take any days off in those 2 months?

Also did you excercise twice a day on all the days of the week? Was there a rest day?

@teja break up the exercise routine into ten minute slots that will help save time.

@ RK no binge eating is bad any way you look at it. better to give in to your urge and have a small bite rather than binge.

@ Sony Drinking water after eating affects digestion, best to avoid too much water after eating.

cashmere i walk 5 km in a day.i complete 1 km in 10 mins then i take rest for 2-3 min and then skip for 1 min around 100 counts or jog for 200 mtrs. is this correct and one more thing i m not able to reduce now.my weight is hanging around 70-72.i came down from 78 to 70.my regime is same .wat wuld be the prob?

@ nasreen you have reached the stage that is called the plateau! This is where despite all the diet control and exercise the body will not loose weight. Now take a break for 5 days from exercises. Continue eating healthy and then restart exercises after 5 days, then you will be able to move the weight again.

@ Aswini, phulkas, rotis, bread are all forms of carbohydrates. It takes physical activity to use the energy provided by the carbs and if you do not do that much physical activity, it gets converted to fat and stored in the body. So conventionally it is better to eat less carbs at dinner since after dinner we do little physical activity.

@ Ashwini You need to write down every thing you eat for a week in a notebook. Then calculate your daily average calorie intake. You can use calorie calculators on the internet to help you. There are a number of free ones. Then work out how many calories you can cut down in the day. While losing weight its best to stick to a diet of 12000 calories a day. In addition to that you need to burn at least 500 calories a day. And 15 minutes is not enough for that. You need to do more exercise to ensure that you burn calories. Cutting down on intake is not enough to lose weight.

Don't eat anything fried. Avoid fruits like mango, banana, grapes and cheekus as they have high fructose content. That means more sugar for the system. Not needed when you are trying to lose weight. Apples, oranges and papya are excellent fruits to eat.

It is not necessary to use the gym to lose weight. Walking and yoga exercises combination works just fine. You need to feel the difference in your body as you walk and usually if you can talk clearly with no loss of breath while walking, it means you can go faster :)

With a medical problem like thyroid the weight can go up and down like a Yo Yo. It would be a good idea to enlist the help of a good nutritionist and personal fitness trainer if you are really serious about losing 10 kgs. This is because the body with thyroid problems does not react the same way to food and exercise as a normal body will. You need specialized care, so get it.

Merely walking is not enough, you need to gradually pick up the speed and cover the same distance in less time. Ideally you should be able to walk 5 km in 45 minutes at your peak.
