Exercise does not always equal pain

For most of us to find the motivation to exercise can be really difficult. In most cases it is linked with trying to lose weight and that in itself is a demoralizing thought.

What with diet control and calorie counting and now struggling to burn the fat with exercise, it just sounds like way too much work with no forthcoming results. But guess what? Exercise can be fun.

Here's a list of fun workouts that don't feel like exercises but will still burn fat.

Gardening

It may seem like a rather passive activity, but if you are growing flowers and vegetables in your back yard, you will get a decent work out in the bargain.

The weeding, planting, fertilizing and watering take time and effort. Plus you have a beautiful display to show for your efforts. Well worth trying out.

Dancing

A night out in the town can actually mean a whole lot of calories burning up. Of course you will have to actually work up a sweat rather than just sway to the music.

Even if you don't go out, just record a CD with some of the best foot tapping numbers you know. Now spend half an hour a day dancing to this CD.

Walk and Talk

I hate going for a walk without my cell phone. I use the time I am walking to catch up with the lives of friends and family.

The added advantage to this is that I end up doing more rounds than originally planned because some one I was talking to has not finished the story they were telling me.

Strip Tease

Stop laughing, those girls really work hard at this art. Don't believe me, then try it out on your own. Develop a strip tease routine. Use a Pole dancer's techniques.

Believe me sliding up and down that pole is quite a work out. I know because I tried it once. Plus you can put it to some good use else where :)

Go to the Mall

Head over to the largest Mall in town, and now begin window shopping. Don't take any elevators or escalators. Walk the entire length and breadth of the floor before you climb up to the next level.

Oh, just make sure you leave all your credit cards at home. We want to lose weight on the body and not in the bank balance.

Join a Class

It could be Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, Rope Climbing, Kick Boxing, Judo or whatever else grabs your fancy. Just as long as it involves you doing some physical activity.

The regular practice sessions will burn calories, you will make friends and lose weight. Plus when you pay for a class the compulsion to attend it becomes a high motivator.

Leave your comfort zone

Train for an adventure sport that will take you out of your comfort zone. It could be para sailing, hang gliding, jet skiing, surfing, sledging, snow boarding, or any thing else that you have never tried in your life before.

Besides burning the fat and losing calories you will also gain an interesting conversation piece. And the added confidence that comes from mastering a new skill.

So get rid of the notion that exercise is no fun and get out there and pick a work out.

WOW!

Gaining weight due to some serious work on computers, I was looking something like this. I do have some good exercise equipment at home but always reluctant to do that, maybe my muscles won't move or don't feel like moving. LOL

BTW gardening is a new hobby, but its not the hard and serious kind of gardening, still I feel fresh after it like I have done some serious workout.

And are you writing some extremely good hubs lately or I haven't read your previous hubs properly?

Cool ideas. If you do one a day of each of these it won't even seem like you did any work. Thanks.

It's so true that when you do something for fun it doesn't really feel like exercising. I do all of the above -except for joining a class- but I enjoy gardening during the warm months, walking everywhere, dancing the weekends, streepteasing (ok. I won't say any more here) and of course doing strange things every now and again like parachuting!

If it is fun you have more chance to succeed at keeping up with the activity you choose.

I agree with gardening and go to the mall, really burn fat faster, only don't let the smell from the food court tempt our nose and eyes :) Great hub!

Great ideas for burning those calories. Everyday activities that people do and don't realize how good it is for them. I walk 4 to 6 miles every day and do cardio and weight training. Great hub.

Great tips! I believe exercise should be fun or you are not likely to stick with it. I've never tried a strip tease class, but I've heard it's a fantastic workout.

Great Hub. I agree with finding an exercise routine that fits your pleasurable needs as well as health needs. I enjoy rock climbing and parkour, as well as pullups and cycling. Good post!

Many people think that exercise is just wearing your tank top and doing some pushups! They're wrong - exercise can be as fun as dancing, which you mentioned in this great Hub as wonderful physical activity!

I totally agree. There is so much fun stuff that can qualify for good exercise routines, you just need to find your own.

Great hub cashmere! Not only does exercise not always have to equal pain, but it can be detrimental to your health. Studies show that the longest living people on our planet engage in moderately intense exercise they ENJOY on a daily basis. Voted up!

Thank you MosLadder, these days my workout consists of climbing up five stories at least twice a day! :)

Well that will do it! I had a similar routine getting in and out of a condo for years.
