Understanding the Tarot
There is a lot of misunderstanding about what the Tarot really is. Most people think it has something to do with dark magic or some thing equally sinister. It is nothing of the sort.
The tarot is essentially a set of cards which are used to guide you. There is no preset life that you must live. Every day you make decisions which will affect how the rest of your life plays out. What we do is that in times of difficulty we turn to the Tarot for guidance.
It is a way to connect with your higher self which is so much more in tune with the spiritual universe from which we all stem. We are sent signs in everyday life which we ignore, so when we want help it is difficult to know how to ask for it. This is where the tarot helps streamline things.
It is a guide. It does not predict the actual future, It only shows you what will be the possible future should you take a set of actions that you are contemplating. There is also a huge difference in the readings done by a professional and any person who is dabbling in the Tarot readings as a hobby.
So remember gettiing a free tarot reading is not always the best way to get introduced to the tarot. At the same time there are some automated online Tarot sites that offer tarot readings.

Getting a Tarot Reading Done
The process of getting a live Tarot Reading is naturally very different from getting a Tarot online reading. Naturally you have to fix an appointment, but besides that there are a few things you can do to ensure a good reading.
First free your mind from any other doubts and fears that you may have. Relax with some deep breathing and remind yourself that nothing is binding and final. You are here for guidance which is just the same as getting advice from a friend. You may or may not decide to act on it.
Get to know your Tarot medium better as a person as it will make it easier for you to connect with her or him. There is no need to tell all your inner secrets or desires to this person. In fact some Tarot readings can be done without even revealing the question to the Tarot reader.
Ask about these techniques if you want to ensure full privacy, but such readings are open to many interpretations and the reader may not be able to give a very accurate reading. It is best to share the question with the psychic medium so as to avoid any ambiguity.

Teach Yourself Tarot
The basics of the Tarot are availble on the internet should you choose to acquaint yourself with them. You can start with the two links that i have provided, but they are just the beginning in a very interesting journey.
Learning from a teacher is always the best thing for an esoteric science, but many of us will shy away from it. The cost of the course is just a small reason, we are actually unwilling to leave ourselves feeling so vulnerable with a stranger. I know I was not. I learnt from my aunt and still was reluctant to share parts of myself with her.
So it was easier for me to pick up books on Tarot and browse the net for resources. I must say initially it was very frsustrating as it was all hit or miss. The trial and error manner did pay off eventually, partly because I feel I was ready to recieve the knowledge. Anyway, today I regularly do Tarot Readings for friends and family and they say I'm quite good.
As with any esoteric science you can not take with out giving back, so I charge a single buck for my readings. That way both sides can relax and enjoy the reading without it being a financial strain. But the easiest thing to do is to get yourself a deck and start learning.

Iam interested in Tarot Card Reading, although I know about astrology and numerology. Good hub. Looking forward to read more of them
I've always been curious about Tarot readings. This is an interesting hub.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who had reservations about opening myself to a tarot reader.
Besides using the cards for reading people's fortune, do you also play the game? I like to play, but I don't have anyone here who knows how. Perhaps it is time for me to get a reading. Can you do a reading for yourself or is that not kosher for whatever reason?
Nice hub, nice topic!
I'm glad that I had read this and not go through with a Tarot reading?! To be honest, I didn't know what it is until I done more research.
Cashmere, this was well written and informative. I'd like to learn a little about the Tarot. I started to learn some years back, but stopped because I never got past the this-is-too-close-for-comfort stage.
Very well done, loved to have mine done!
dori
Never tried but I must say I am a little curious...
Oh cashmere I am so glad and I think blessed that I found you. This is a subject which I am really interested in. At the moment I am in great trouble financially and i you don't mind I really like a reading.
I met two readers in my life who were absolutely fantastic. One told me all my life and every bit came true. The other lady read my mother in 1945 or there about and she predicted, now sit tight, that NY a hugh building will be destroyed. I nearly fell off the chair when I saw it on 11 Sept 2001. She also predicted many other things ref to my mother. Ever since I belief you can see the future in Tarrot cards. Some people are gifted and very good.
According to my research the Tarot cards go back to being put in Egyptian hieroglyphics, then traveled around until they go to Europe, and all over the world. The first 22 cards are the Major Arcana and are designed from the Jewish Biblical information about the stages we go through in our lives. The other 56 cards are the Minor Arcana and discuss the details of what might happen, in the Court cards like the Kings, Queens, Knights, Pages, who might be involved in our lives or affect our lives. Kings are older men, Queens older women, Knights Younger Men or Women, Pages, Messenger cards and even younger Men or Women. Those are the basics. I use the Robin Wood Tarot deck a Witches version of the basic Ryder Waite card deck, which is one designed by a lady, and one of the most widely used decks in the world. The Ryder Waite deck shows more details on the cards than the Robin Wood deck if you find books on how to read the Tarot. The favorite I'm using now is, "How To Read The Tarot," by Sylvia Abraham who is a very informed author. When I do go to a Metaphysical store I thumb through the book and see if I like the details, if it shows a picture of a card on it, as it helps you visualize, if it has Key Words or Phrases, as those will help you keep in mind, when you're reading for people, as you say, like for the 9 of Swords card for instance, "Oh Sleepless Nights? Having problems sleeping lately?" Kind of shows you even if you're reading it out of a book, you basically know the theme of each card. I have so many books, I can't memorize them all, but even though I read out of books, I still get impressions and tell people as I go, as it is a responsibility, to tell people the truth always. I read all cards upright, as the meanings come out even still, and I think reversed are so negative! I've been doing Tarot readings for my friends, family and myself for about 14 yrs. now, and I still read the answers out of the books, and choose which ones I like more at the time, usually a book that is more informative, like one that includes astrological information a bit in it, refers back to the Major Arcana cards numerologically, and as a connection to other cards, Etc. So hopefully that helps. I never charged for readings as I use books, and I've heard sleep with the deck under your pillow to learn it, and that didn't work for me. Ha ha ha.... So I just keep buying books, and using different ones, and I have predicted two pregnancies in my town, break ups, divorce issues, thefts, deaths (unfortunately), and the Death card can also stand for ends of situations, ends of a way of life, end of a current relationship, Etc. not just the end of a life, although in my life, in my family, it has stood for the death of my only brother, parents, and recently this year, my ex husband last month in October, and my Father this last March this year in 2009, so not pleasant there. Also I have predicted proposals, would be romances upcoming, spouses cheating on each other, Etc. So Tarot as books will tell you, is not a Parlor Game. I did hear of a friend in Morocco, who does play games with their Moroccan Fez deck, and there are a ton of decks, the best thing is buy the deck that calls to you, look at the sample deck, check out the cards, and if it seems like the one buy it. The Sylvia Abraham books use Ryder Waite decks as pictorial examples as in the How To Read The Tarot, so Ryder Waite is a good place to start. I also have Oracle cards, which are nothing like Tarot, but do predict things just the same. I have the Avalon Oracle which is exciting to me as I love King Arthur stuff, and it is about the Avalon Priestesses who could "part the mist to get to Avalon," and who had blue crescent moons and stars on their forehead, and the female author had that too, and I have a tattoo I had my ex tattoo on my left hand, as I used to write it in pen ink and decided to get it tattooed not knowing it was the sign of the Avalon Priestesses, so I was thrilled to find this out after buying the deck, needless to say! Well anyways I just joined here today, so hopefully that helps others also besides your wonderful Hub Cashmere! So that deck called to me for a reason. I read my own cards also. I start off with Avalon Oracle then go on to the Celtic Knot reading like you showed with the Robin Wood deck. I relax, put on witchy poo music, (I've been called a Natural Witch-but a good one lol), light incense, a candle, line up my crystal ball, and some sea salt, (for the for directions and elements)then I'm in the mood for magic in my life. You can also buy books about casting a protective circle around yourself or your friends to read, so as Fallen Angels won't disturb you in your relaxation mode, and it feels very warm and safe in one, I used to do that more often, not as much lately. But the four elements of course and directions are this:
1) West-The Water-Ocean-A Chalice of Water/Dish/Crystal Ball
2) South-The Fire-A Candle
3) East-The Air-Incense
4) North-The Earth-Sea Salt/Dirt/Plants
Take care and have a good day, goodnight,
BlondeMorticia
Greetings Cashmere:
I really enjoyed your Hub. I read Tarot Cards for folks and have found that some people are just scared of them. Fear of the unknown I guess. Any, thanks for a good read.
Dr. Marie
Thank you so much Cashmere. I know all the people around me misunderstand the pure nature of tarot because some have perverted its use for fun and games. I use it to help me meditate and write in code in my journals so that only I understand personal things. The intent for Tarot is good and even considered to be used by early saints. I have a real love for my deck and I wish the christian culture and family that I deeply love would see the truth...There are many things in the old testament that would be considered witchcraft now! LOL...putting salt in the Jordan river to represent God's healing power...that is called wiccan now, to use salt... The Urim and Thumim (articles used when the High Priest asked God's counsel for all Israel)..and the breast piece of decision covered with small objects, symbols to confirm the truth of oracles to others....etc etc...it is in the human to be one with the Spirit, but we are taught to deny its power....
Cashmere,
Well put! You make it all sound so easy. Yeah!
Best to you,
Carolyn

Great article on the basics!!!! Tarot has changed my life:)
The Tarot is a method for meditation, contemplation, clarification, spiritual development and problem solving. It enables us to tap into the collective unconscious and universal energy that often can not be accessed through our everyday experiences. They always offer a new outlook or perspective on the issues we face day to day.
Best to you,
Carolyn
I'm glad you read it.
I think the best thing about tarot is that it can be done by anybody. It's very easy to learn and get started with. And it's a great test of your own ability to challenge yourself.
Wouldn't it be nice if more people did tarot? We would all be better for it. A lot more would get done in the area of helping one another.
Thanks for the post, I like it.
Lisa
Cashmere, I need guidance. Spread the cards for me.
I would agree with you that Tarot represents a good tool as opposed to some mysterious force. Truth be told I've done multiple readings on a single question and received basic the same result, meaning the mind singles out what you need to know.
Within the current economic uncertainty it is not surprising to see that tarot readings have increased. It is good to see this well written article which obviously reflects a true understanding of this subject
is this free?
Nice post. I was checking constantly this blog and I'm impressed! Extremely useful information specially the last part :) I care for such info a lot. I was looking for this certain info for a very long time. Thank you and good luck.
Thanks for such a good hub.
I use Tarot as a means of getting to know myself. What I've noticed that the Tarot cards started to really "speak" to me only after a number of months that I've played with them. Also, I notice that Tarot seems to reflect the mood in which I draw a card. If I am happy I oftentimes draw the Sun, Ten of Cups or similar happiness cards. If I feel somewhat gloomy I tend to draw much more grim cards. It's amazing how Tarot can reflect who we are inside!
